Traveling through Europe, specifically Germany, with your kids is sure to be a vacation that they will dearly remember and treasure for the rest of their lives.
While some cities aren't necessarily the most kid-friendly places, Munich is known to be a perfect destination for both adults and children alike. There are so many family orientated things to see and do around the Bavarian city that your traveling clan will be entertained for days on end!
Museums for Kids
Munich is renowned for its world famous museums and collections.
Deutsches Museum
While most children might think that museums are boring places to visit, the Deutsches Museum’s Kids Kingdom is great for even the smallest traveler in your group. This interactive exhibit lets your children get right in on the action and they’ll think twice about museums ever being boring again!
In the Childrens Kingdom they can sit behind the wheel of a real fire truck, come up close with the moon, get their hands on manual powered machines, and even hear the wail of a giant guitar!
Your kids will be having so much fun that they won't even realize that they're learning valuable science lessons in the process. Along with the special kids area, be sure to check out the entire Deutsches Museum, which features collections centered on natural sciences, transportation, music and technology.
Munich for Kids: Animals!
Sea Life Munich
Sure, Munich is known for beer, Oktoberfest, and its traditional Bavarian culture. But you probably didn’t know that you and your whole family can get up close and personal with some of the deep sea’s biggest and wildest creatures right in the heart of the city!
Sea Life Munich, located in the Olympiapark, is a huge aquarium that features more than 4,500 marine animals.
Along with 33 engaging and colorful displays, the park has an interactive rockpool where your kids can feel a live starfish and even hold a crab! It’s a great way to cool off on a hot, summer afternoon, but is open year round for your family to enjoy no matter when you visit Munich.
The Munich Zoo: Tierpark Hellabrunn
And if you happen to also like animals that live on dry land, the Munich Zoo is always a fun daytrip for families. Unlike other traditional zoos, the Munich zoo is more of a nature preserve with large, structured enclosures.
The feel of the place is more safari than urban landscape and is a great way to see animals in their ‘natural’ habitat. Located just south of the city center, near the underground station (orange line: U3) Thalkirchen look for signs to Tierpark Hellabrunn to lead the way. You can't miss the station, because it's colorfully painted with all kinds of animals, and usually plenty of children get off here:-)
The Zoo Hellabrunn is truly a Munich for Kids activity!
Amusement Parks
Legoland
Less than an hour outside of Munich is an amusement park like few others.
Legoland Deutschland in Günzburg is an action-packed, activity-filled park that’s great for all ages. The park covers an area the size of 26 football fields and is divided into eight themed areas.
Miniland, the centerpiece of Legoland, realistically recreates popular European cities on a 1/20th scale. Walk through the detailed ‘streets; of Berlin, Frankfurt, Venice and other popular European cities without ever having to leave the park.
Soar on rollercoasters, cool off on the wild water rides, get in on the actions in the Lego experiment centers and find your inner child while giving your kids the thrill of a lifetime.
